Position Summary

The Senior Consultant and Principal will:
  • Have deep experience in the areas of fundraising, development, and/or nonprofit consulting and will have the ability to deliver excellent client service.
  • Have deep experience and knowledge in the independent schools sector
  • Lead client teams, work as a member of other teams and will provide mentorship to Consultants, Associate Consultants and others. 
  • Have significant responsibility for expanding the firm’s client base and revenue through business development activities, proactive and reactive sales, and thought leadership opportunities. 
  • Work primarily in the Schools Practice of the firm, although may have clients in other areas (e.g., higher education, arts and culture, healthcare).
  • Report to the Chief Operating Officer and work closely with consultants and other firm members as part of a team to enable our clients to successfully fulfill their missions.

Position Details

Participate in client engagements by providing service delivery (60%)
  • Performs in the role of lead consultant on some client engagements, serving as the primary point of contact with the client in meetings, communications, and day-to-day activities;
  • Takes ownership of service delivery when serving as the lead consultant, which includes independently directing the completion of interviews (with the client’s internal stakeholders and external constituents), assessments, and other deliverables;
  • Performs the role of team member on some client engagements, supporting the lead consultant and taking a leadership role in completing reports either by drafting directly or providing oversight to associate consultants and reviewing draft deliverables in a timely manner before sending them to the lead.
Drive business through marketing, thought leadership and proactive sales (30%)
  • Identifies opportunities for renewing and extending work with existing clients, working to execute against that goal;
  • Takes leadership role in sales presentations for new opportunities, organizing and delivering information to potential and returning clients;
  • Works closely with Client Relations and other firm members to ensure projects are scoped and priced appropriately and that the firm’s proposed approaches are tailored to meet the client’s needs;
  • Reviews and edits business proposals before final submission;
  • Gains exposure to market/practice development, building pipelines and cultivating business leads;
  • Identifies opportunities to contribute to the field of philanthropy in an area of specialty (such as practice and/or sub-practice) or technical skill (such as analytics, data, and/or communications) through thought leadership.  Leverages thought leadership strategically to attract new clients or projects from existing clients.
Contributes to the growth of the firm through internal activities (10%)
  • Provides mentorship and training to other firm members in areas of service delivery;
  • Contributes to the firm’s collective wisdom by sharing new trends and innovations encountered in the field;
  • Takes a leadership role in firm-wide initiatives and activities, either by leading workstreams or significant bodies of work.

Required Qualifications

  • Fifteen or more years of experience—and a track record of success in a senior development role in Independent Schools and/or consulting experience working with Independent Schools;
  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking;
  • Strong relationship management, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to handle multiple, competing priorities and successfully see projects from inception to completion while adhering to strict, and often moving, deadlines;
  • Technical literacy, including strong experience with MS Office software – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CRM software;
  • Proficiency in gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing data;
  • Knowledge of the advancement of philanthropy;

It is anticipated that this person will work out of their home with the necessary equipment and supplies to perform their duties provided by Marts&Lundy. This position typically will require project-based travel and may include overnight and air travel for several days during the week.
